While the news media focuses on sensationalized hollywood stories, the horrifying story of Ms. Williams gets no attention.

Megan Williams Associated Press article

Before I begin explaining the tragic and blood-boiling story of Megan Williams, I would like to thank many social networking websites for bringing this story to my attention. I do warn you that Ms. Williams’ story is one of the most twisted and sick torture that I have ever heard.

Megan Williams is a 20 year old African American living in West Virginia. According to police reports, Ms. Williams was brutally raped and tortured by three men and three women for a whole week. She is currently in the hospital recovering from her injuries, but the horror she went through goes beyond any conceivable sick imagination. Although I will not reveal the details of her torture on this article, I will point out that she was found with large amounts of her hair torn off from her scalp. The most surprisingly detail of her torture was that her captors yelled racial slurs during the painful week. All six captors are white.

The six captors are currently charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and battery. The prosecutors are expected to ask for the harshest prison sentence. While I have no doubt that the court system will bring justice to the captors, there is no question that Ms. Williams’ life is permanently damaged, and she will be needing care for the long term.

I am horrified by the story, but I am extremely disappointed and angered by the big media corporations’ absence in covering this story. Some people accuse the media for partial racism, because Ms. Williams was an African American. However, I believe racism did not play a role in the story’s unpopularity among the news networks, and instead I think that the main stream media might have focused too much on other on-going events.

But even that reasoning does not excuse the media from ignoring Ms. Williams’ story. If I turn on to one of the 24 hour cable news outlets, then I see a bunch of stories that gets repeated every half hour. Furthermore, these news organizations feature stories of Hollywood celebrities with an insatiable obsession on analyzing clothing, domestic disputes, and other personal details of these overrated individuals. Did they run out of real news? Why don’t they look a little closer on the news wire and feature Ms. Williams?

My objection is not about the news media not featuring Ms. Williams on the top story list. I am merely sick of watching stories without legitimate eventful value while other stories, such as Ms. Williams, get tossed out. This is a free country, and the private media industry can do whatever they want with their 24 hour news channels, but they should realize that they lost all integrity for broadcasting news worthy stories. I value the 24 hour news channels as my source of low class entertainment.
